"Your Front Door Sets The Stage"

By Donna Jolean

How many times have you walked or driven past a home and found yourself simply captivated by its beauty? Think about it. More than likely the first thing your eye was drawn to was the front door! So why is it that so many of us neglect to even use our front doors? We find our guest trudging through the dusty garage or coming around to be greeted at the back door, only using the front entry for dinner parties and special occasions. Ask yourself, what made me take that second glance?

Maybe it was the color of the door. A certain style or it could be the way the door itself was accessorized that sparked your attention. It’s possible that pots of flowers placed gently around the doorway smiled at you as you past by.

You want your home to be special, to stand out from the rest, to be warm and inviting!

The front door is usually the main focal point of a house. It literally sets the stage, peaking ones curiosity for what’s to come. It has been said that the heartbeat of the home begins at the front door.

You may be in the market for a front door and there are hundreds of door choices, ranging in price and style. Whether you choose wood, glass, metal, antique or new the scale of the door and the style of the door should reflect and compliment the style of your home.

You may not be in the market for a new front door at all.

You may want to just spruce up the one you have! In this case, I would remind you of the power of color. Don’t be afraid to use it! Why not choose your favorite color and paint your front door? After all it is your house, it’s your front door, and if it’s your favorite color you’ll love it. The color will not only look wonderful, it will also exude your personality. Just to note while we are talking about paint color. Remember the door color you choose should contrast with the color of the exterior walls of your home. For instance while navy or black are very classy choices, used on a darker exterior, these colors may tend to get lost. Whereas using the same navy or black on a lighter exterior home would look rich and sophisticated.

Once you have decided on a front door, don’t forget the details. Hardware is key in dressing your door. I happen to love door knockers. I personally have a large lions head door knocker at my front entry that I simply adore! The look you want to achieve can be sassy, classic or a simple and refined one. It is totally up to you. There are so many to choose from these days.

Lets talk a little more about the potted flowers I mentioned earlier. I enjoy using oversized urns containing evergreens such as Italian cypress or English boxwood, because they look nice all year round. Depending on the time of year or the mood I want to convey, I can add clusters of potted seasonal flowers like hibiscus, pansies or mums. Chippendale planters with ivy topiaries or large clay pots spilling over with English ivy are always an excellent choice and easily maintained. If you aren’t particularly keen on flowers or simply have no time for maintenance, Opt for statuary. Create drama by using a pair of regal looking lions on either side of the doorway. Or, have a single whippet dog standing guard to one side. Maybe you would like the idea of using a pair of oversized pineapple or acorn finials. Whatever you select, accessorizing and adding just the right touches will make for a gracious entry!

I hope I have encouraged you to set the stage with your front door, make your home shine with your personality and style, and most of all put that front entry to use!
